While participating in tatreez initiatives, we noticed a recurring challenge: limited access to high-resolution, easy-to-follow and affordable patterns. This obstacle is especially pronounced in underserved communities who often rely on photos of patterns shared via social media which are typically pixelated, cropped or black and white. This access inequality is further exacerbated by the fact that Palestinians in the Arab world are often excluded from international museums where tatreez knowledge is shared.

Additionally, UNESCO considers the ability to access and enjoy cultural knowledge—without fear of repercussion—a human right. UNESCO also encourages leveraging new and innovative methods, including technology, to safeguard and increase access to cultural knowledge.
This is especially important for tatreez which was recently added to UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage, this highlights the dangers threatening the viability and continuity of tatreez.
Aligned with these efforts, Tirazain is committed to preserving and facilitating the transmission of culture by placing tatreez knowledge in Palestinian hands.
تعتبر اليونسكو أن القدرة على الوصول إلى المعرفة الثقافية والاستمتاع بها - دون خوف من العواقب - حقًا من حقوق الإنسان. تشجع اليونسكو أيضًا الاستفادة من الأساليب الجديدة والمبتكرة، بما في ذلك التكنولوجيا، لحماية المعرفة الثقافية وزيادة الوصول إليها

Tirazain was created in the memory of our ancestors—Palestinian women who are the makers of the featured motifs and patterns.
Tirazain is a collaborative effort; nomenclature, attribution and patterns are digitized and preserved based on books, journals and photography including references by Sliman Mansour and Nabil Anani who documented hundreds of motifs after visiting Palestinian villages and studying old dresses, photographs and books.

Tirazain is an interactive, searchable and barrier-free digital library. So far, 1,000+ motifs have been digitized and published as images with or without grids, editable design files and machine embroidery formats. Artists can filter or search based on topic, origin and project duration in Arabic and English.
