Sliman Mansour

Sliman Mansour is one of the most well-renowned and distinguished Palestinian artists. With a career spanning over forty years, Sliman gained international recognition for his visual portralys of Palestinian identity. While his pieces feature various elements of Palestinian culture and history, such as, olive trees and village life, Sliman’s work also uniquely represents Palestinian women as maternal protectors of Palestinian people. Women in embroidered dresses are the focal point in many of his paintings.

“The woman, for me, symbolizes revolution and homeland, especially as she wears the traditional embroidered Palestinian dress, which I find very beautiful.”

Sliman Mansour’s contributions to the preservation of Palestinian embroidery are immeasurable. Sliman Mansour partnered with Nabil Anani to document Palestinian embroidery motifs and patterns with support from Inash AlUsra Association and Dar Al-Tifel Al-Arabi. After visiting several villages and studying old dresses, photographs and books, Sliman Mansour and Nabil Anani published the book “Guide to the Palestinian Art of Embroidery” documenting hundreds of Palestinian embroidery motifs and patterns.

We’re so grateful for Sliman Mansour’s support of Tirazain’s mission to to digitally document, preserve and reclaim Palestinian embroidery.
